Historical Information

Officially hoisted 12 July 1979. This is the heraldic banner of arms of Kiribati. The frigate bird (Fregata minor) is a symbol of authority, freedom and traditional dances. The rising sun stands for the Equator, whose length within the borders of Kiribati is more than 4000km (2500 miles). The white and blue waves symbolize the Pacific Ocean, of which some 5 million sq km (2 million sq miles) belong to Kiribati.
